It will be two years on September 17, 2023, since the Squid Game started to spread across the country and around the world. How is well-awaited Season 2 coming along? What do we know about it?
To quickly review, Squid Game Season 1 was made up of nine episodes that followed Seong Gi-hun, an ex-husband who liked to gamble, and 455 other downtrodden strangers as they were knocked out with gas and taken to a secret island complex to play a series of children’s games that were turned deadly.
Finally coming out of the ordeal as the only survivor, Gi-hun barely touched his 45.6 billion won paycheck for a whole year until he was invited to a mysterious meeting with Oh Il-Nam, also known as “The Old Man.” Oh, Il-nam was thought to have been killed after Round 4, but he was actually alive and running this illegal business the whole time! The Old Man died soon after they got back together, though. He had been sick with a brain tumor.
Is There a Squid Game Season 2 Release Date?
There isn’t a set date for Season 2 of Squid Game yet, but it should come out in late 2024. What’s on Netflix says that shooting for Squid Game’s second season will begin in July 2023 and last for 10 months. People say that Dong-hyuk wrote Season 1 over the course of 10 years. Thankfully, this season won’t take as long.
Squid Game Season 2 Cast: Who’s in It?
Lee Jung-Jae will play Seong Gi-Hun again. Lee Byeong-Heon will play Hwang In-ho again, Wi Ha-Joon will play Hwang Jun-ho, and Gong Yoo will play the person who finds new players.
In fact, when creator Hwang Dong-hyuk talked to Deadline about the second season, he said he’ll “try something to bring back [dead characters] in Season 2.” That could mean anything from short flashbacks to shows that take place before or after the first set of episodes.
“So many figures died, and many people loved them.” He told Reuters, “I’m sorry I killed them so quickly; I didn’t know this was going to happen.” He also said, “I want to revive Ji-young, but her best friend Sae-byeok also died.”
But the way Season 1 ends makes us think that Season 2 will have a pretty much entirely different cast. The director said he wanted to get Leonardo DiCaprio for the series, but it probably won’t happen.
In the second season, more unknown actors have been cast in unspecified parts. These actors are Kang Ha-Neul, Yim Si-Wan, Park Sung-Hoon, and Yang Dong-Geun.
On June 29, eight more cast members were named: Park Gyu-young, Jo Yu-ri, Kang Ae-sim, Lee David, Lee Jin-uk, Choi Seung-hyun, Roh Jae-won, and Won Ji-an. Cheoul-su, Young-hee’s boyfriend, will also be in Season 2 of Squid Game. She is the popular doll from the game Green Light, Red Light that moves around.
What’s the Season 2 Plot?
Hwang, the author of Squid Game, has said that Season 1 was meant to be “an allegory or fable about modern capitalist society, something that shows an extreme competition, similar to the extreme competition of life.”
There aren’t many clues about Season 2, but Hwang has said that it will continue where Season 1 left off, with Seong Gi-hun continuing to look into the people behind the deadly tournament.
In the last seconds of Season 1, Gi-hun chose not to reunite with his daughter who had moved to the United States but to stay in Korea and get revenge on the people who put on the deadly games that he barely escaped. In Season 2, Hwang told the AP, that Gi-hun would “do something for the world.”
