One of my favorite months to travel in the United States is January. Because everyone is still waking up from their holiday stupor, there are usually fewer people to deal with.
And the possibility of cold weather keeps many people at home, even if they don’t have to travel to a frigid area. If you want to obtain a winter tan, there are plenty of warm US spots to visit in January.

1. National Park of Zion
Utah has more to offer than Salt Lake City, the slopes of Park City, and the Sundance International Film Festival.
Zion National Park, with its breathtaking canyons and snow-capped peaks, is one of the top US holiday destinations in January. It’s the ideal moment to avoid the crowds! Long lines of cars waiting to get through the front gate are common in Zion. This is not the case in January, when wait times are minimal.
2. Sun Valley, Idaho
Sun Valley is best known for having the first ski chairlift, but even if you forgo the ski resorts and winter sports, there is plenty to do in Sun Valley.
Snowshoeing in Galena is like something out of a dream novel. It’s as though you’ve stepped into the pages of Narnia. I recommend hiring a guide, especially if this is your first time.

When it’s time to defrost, travel to Frenchman’s Bend Hot Springs. There are several hot springs in the Sun Valley area, but Frenchman’s is a particularly famous tourist attraction due to the neighboring soaking tub, which is utilized for cooling off if the hot spring lives up to its name.

Tony’s Crab Shack has wonderful fish tacos, and the Fish Market next door is ideal for a warm bread bowl of salmon chowder. Redfish will hook you up not just with wonderful fresh seafood, but also with a spectacular ocean view.
4. Pensacola, Florida
Okay. Finally, a popular vacation spot. If you came here looking for warm places to visit in January, congratulations! Pensacola should be on your list of locations to visit in January in the South.
Begin your journey with a sailing tour of the Florida coast. The weather is ideal this time of year; it’s warm enough to wear a dress or shorts while avoiding the summer heat. We paid a little over $200 for a two-hour boat cruise. The best thing was that wine and beer were provided.
Seville is a late-night piano bar with a complete menu of delectable Southern goodies, and George’s Bistro is a hipster weekend brunch haunt with uniquely wonderful beverage options.
5. Yellowstone National Park
You’re unlikely to see Kevin Costner (or anyone else from the Yellowstone cast), but Yellowstone National Park is still one of the best places to visit in January. Wyoming’s average January temperature is 25 °F.
Surprisingly, this makes it the perfect time to watch wildlife. In the winter, animals migrate to the warmer lowlands, making it the ideal time to photograph them while hiking or on a snowy guided winter tour.
6. Texas’s South Padre Island
The Rio Grande Valley’s hidden jewel! South Padre Island is home to what some consider to be Texas’ best beach, as well as so many activities that you’ll wish you had more vacation days. It’s one of the finest places to visit with family in January because there’s something for everyone.
Begin your vacation with the well-known South Padre Island birding. As you stroll through the water on boardwalk planks in the birds’ natural habitat, you’ll get up close and personal with a wide variety of species. You may also take a class on baby alligators for a nominal price!
7. Tucson, Arizona
Hiking in Tucson in January is a million times better than any other time of year. Otherwise, it is simply too hot! Tucson has some of the most breathtaking desert scenery in the United States. And the most massive cacti.

Hilton Head Island is only a 45-minute drive from Savannah International Airport. While the weather is a touch too cool for laying down on the beach this time of year (it’s usually around 60–65), it’s the ideal time of year to beat the crowds for other fantastic activities.
The Hilton Head Distillery is well-known for its tasty hoppy IPAs and knowledgeable tour guides who take visitors behind the scenes of the beer-making process. And don’t forget to get some fresh seafood at Hudson’s Seafood House on the Docks!
9. Mammoth Lakes, California
Mammoth Lakes is a California treasure located in the Sierra Nevada highlands. It’s a true fire and ice song, with the option of skiing down icy slopes or soaking in hot springs.
Visit DAOU Lounge (a Paso Robles-based vineyard) for a wine tasting at 9,000 feet, or taste the flavors of Spanish-Cuban-Puerto Rican fusion at Dos Alas.
Don’t forget to visit Mammoth Lakes Village, a busy ski town with loads of places to dine, shop, and explore. If you’re looking for a day trip, neighboring Mono Lake (which looks like an alien planet!) is worth the journey.
10. Death Valley National Park
Without a passport, Death Valley has to be one of the best warm locations to visit in January. It’s simply too hot to visit at other times of the year. Plus, if you go during the winter, you’ll avoid the throngs.
Death Valley National Park is an astoundingly stunning desert that you can hike or sightsee in. Parts of Star Wars were filmed there, so if you want to nerd out, take the self-guided driving tour. The Saline Valley Warm Springs is located in the park and would be an ideal place to relax after a hard day of exploring.
