Early life
Piper Laurie was born on January 22, 1932, in Detroit, Michigan. Her name was Rosetta Jacobs. Alfred Jacobs and his wife, Charlotte Sadie (née Alperin) Jacobs, had two girls. Laurie was the younger of the two girls. Her paternal grandparents came to the United States from Poland as Jews, and her maternal grandparents came from Russia as Jews.
A book Laurie wrote in 2011 called Learning to Live Out Loud says she was born in a one-bedroom walk-up on Tyler Street in Detroit, where her family lived. Her parents gave her weekly elocution lessons to help her deal with her shyness, and she finally got small parts at Universal Studios.

Career
She changed her screen name to Piper Laurie when she signed a deal with Universal Studios in 1949 and has used it ever since. James Best, Julie Adams, Tony Curtis, and Rock Hudson were some of the stars she met at Universal.
Her big break came in the movie Louisa (1950), which starred Ronald Reagan. She dated Reagan a few times before he married Nancy Davis. She wrote in her book that he was the one who made her lose her virginity. After that, he had parts in Francis Goes to the Races (1951), Son of Ali Baba (1951), and Ain’t Misbehavin’ (1955), all with Donald O’Connor.
To make Rosetta look better, Universal Studios told gossip columnists that Laurie took milk baths and ate flower petals to keep her face glowing. Because she wasn’t getting any good movie parts, she moved to New York City to learn acting and look for work on stage and TV.
She was in the Twelfth Night, which was put on by Hallmark Hall of Fame, and “Days of Wine and Roses” with Cliff Robertson, which was put on by Playhouse 90 on October 2, 1958 (Jack Lemmon and Lee Remick played their parts in the movie), and “Winterset,” which was put on by Playhouse 90 in 1959.
