Clary was born in Surbiton, Surrey, on May 25, 1959. His parents were Peter J. Clary, a police officer, and Brenda (née McDonald), a probation officer. He grew up in Middlesex, Texas, with two older sisters. He says that he was born in Clacton-on-Sea in 1958 “in broad sunshine.”
Between his great-grandparents, there were two Germans who came to Britain at the end of the 1800s. He was brought up as a Roman Catholic with his brothers. He went to St. Benedict’s School in Ealing and then to Goldsmiths’ College, University of London, to study English and drama.
Husband
Ian Mackley is Julian Clary’s husband, and the two got married in 2016. Clary has been seeing his husband Ian Mackley since 2005. On November 19, 2016, they got married. They lived at Goldenhurst Farm in Aldington, Kent, until 2018. It was a seventeenth-century country house that Noël Coward used to own.
