Vince Gill’s Career
Vince Gill first became well-known when the country rock band Pure Prairie League released “Let Me Love You Tonight” on their 1979 record Can’t Hold Back. Gill turned down Mark Knopfler’s offer to join Dire Straits, but he did sing background singing on the song “On Every Street.”
By 1981, Gill had left Pure Prairie League to join Rodney Crowell‘s backing band, Cherry Bombs. There, he worked with Tony Brown and Emory Gordy Jr., who would go on to record several of Gill’s albums. Before he signed a solo deal with RCA, Gill put out the bluegrass record Here Today with David Grisman and other artists.
Gill’s albums did not do well, even though several of his country songs (like “If It Weren’t for Him,” “Oklahoma Borderline,” and “Cinderella”) were in the top 10 while he was signed to RCA. When I Call Your Name, his first record for MCA Records, went platinum and brought him back together with producer Tony Brown.
His next albums, Pocket Full of Gold (1991) and I Still Believe in You (with the same-titled top-charting song in the US), also did well at the box office. Gill’s work took off in the 1990s and 2000s thanks to his skill as a guitarist, his moving tenor voice, and his great songwriting.
