Sabotage Studio’s turn-based RPG Sea of Stars has received an official release date as well as a playable demo. The game was announced as part of a series of improvements to many titles at the Nintendo Direct in February 2023. Sea of Stars was announced in 2020 and was initially scheduled to be released in June 2022. However, due to several delays, the title was pushed back to 2023.

Sea of Stars takes place thousands of years before the events of The Messenger. It focuses on two heroes, Zale and Valerie, who harness the power of the sun and moon, respectively, to fight against The Fleshmancer, an alchemist. Zale — The Sunboy: Born on the Summer Solstice, Zale is enthusiastic and courageous. He carries a sun blade that can absorb Eclipse Orbs to give his assaults an extra kick. He treads the path of the Guardian God Solen as a blade dancer. According to the Elder Mist’s prophecy, Zale must “stare at the night inside of him” to find his light and reach his full potential.
Garl — The Warrior-Cook: Garl was born as a normal youngster with no extraordinary abilities. Along with his skills as a cook, his innately robust constitution makes him a capable defensive fighter, allowing him to assist his two best friends in their Solstice Warrior duty. The Elder Mist noticed something strange in the stars around him, as it appeared his heart was just warm enough to “soothe a long tormented soul.”

I like these descriptions since they are already expanding on the lore of this universe. Unfortunately, we only have descriptions for three of the six characters so far, but they will be updated here as soon as they become available.
Apart from the fact that we’re here to kick an alchemist’s buttocks, we don’t know much about the overall plot of Sea of Stars. We got a glimpse of a cult in one of the trailers, but that was it. According to what we know so far, the game will explore themes of adventure and friendship.

The Gameplay of Sea of Stars: What to Expect?
A Sea of Stars sample is already available if you want to get a taste of the action for yourself, but surprise, surprise — it’s a turn-based roleplaying game. If you like Illusion of Gaia, Breath of Fire, or Chrono Trigger, this game is for you.
Aside from the beautiful art style and astronomical themes, what drew me to Sea of Stars was the smoothness of its gameplay. It’s as stiff or unyielding as other turn-based RPGs, and that’s because you can time attacks and hit keys to decrease incoming attacks. You’re an active participant in the fight rather than a bystander.
I love how engaging the environments are – you can sail, swim, and climb. It is not a simple side scroller like most RPGs. Cooking, fishing, and minigames are also confirmed. Nothing beats small activities in an RPG to immerse me in its environment.
I can’t wait to get my hands on Sea of Stars, however, I haven’t played the sample yet because I despise being teased. Damn it, I already want the full thing!
Conclusion
Sea of Stars has captured my heart. Everything I’ve seen so far has piqued my interest in this game, from the amazingly bright art style to the inventive RPG elements.
I recently discovered that not only is Sea of Stars developed by the same developers as The Messenger, but it also takes place in the same universe, thousands of years before the events of the latter game. I haven’t played The Messenger yet, but it’s currently on my list.
