Career Beginnings
After graduating from college, Swit worked in a number of office jobs. She did a lot of different jobs, such as stenography, personal secretary to author Elsa Maxwell, and secretary to Ghana’s minister to the UN. As Swit learned to dance from Rockette Elizabeth Parent-Barber, she also worked at the American Rocket Society. It was also at this time that she took drama classes from Gene Frankel.
Television Career
At the end of 1969, Loretta Swit went to Hollywood. In that same year, she made her TV debut in an episode of “Hawaii Five-O.” Over the next few years, she appeared on the show three more times. Going forward, Swit had guest parts in episodes of many TV shows, such as “Young Dr. Kildare,” “Cade’s County,” “Gunsmoke,” “Mission: Impossible,” and “Mannix.”
In 1972, Loretta got her big break when she was cast as Major Margaret “Hot Lips” Houlihan on the CBS show “M*A*S*H,” which was based on the movie of the same name. Swit took over the part of the horny army nurse from Sally Kellerman, who played the part in the movie. “M*A*S*H” was a huge hit and ran for 11 seasons, ending in 1983. Notably, Swit was one of only four cast members who were on the show the whole time it was on. She was nominated for several Emmys and Golden Globes for her work and won two of them.

Stage Career
Swit first started playing on stage when she was in “An Enemy of the People” at the Actor’s Playhouse and “The Balcony” at Circle in the Square. In 1967, she went on tour with the US cast of “Any Wednesday.” Swit was also in a run of “The Odd Couple” in Los Angeles with Don Rickles and Ernest Borgnine. When she was back in New York in the 1970s, she was in “The Mystery of Edwin Drood” and the love comedy “Same Time, Next Year.” After that, Swit went to Las Vegas to be in the show “Mame” with Susan Hayward.
In the 1990s, Swit started acting in the one-woman play “Shirley Valentine.” She kept doing the play in different places until the 2010s. Swit went back to “Mame” and played the title character in the North Carolina Theatre production of the show in late 2003, among other roles. After that, she played the lead role in Mark Miller’s play “Amorous Crossings” in its world premiere in Jacksonville, Florida. Swit was in the Buffalo, New York, play “Six Dance Lessons in Six Weeks” in 2017.
