Stephen Merchant’s real career began when he started doing stand-up at Bristol’s Comedy Box. Merchant said he got off to a good start but quickly lost his way and learned that stand-up comedy was a lot harder than he thought. In these early years, Merchant also worked as a DJ for Radio Caroline and appeared on the show “Blockbusters.”
Stephen’s work took a big step forward when he met Ricky Gervais for the first time. In 1997, when Stephen was working as the Head of Speech for XFM London, Gervais hired him.
They were co-hosts of a radio show on Saturday nights until 1998 when their radio station was bought by another company. While they were both out of work, Stephen went to the BBC to study media production. Their radio show never had a lot of listeners.
