Wallach started out as an actress in the theater. When he got back to New York, he kept taking acting classes at the Dramatic Workshop of the New School with German director Erwin Piscator. Later, he helped start the Actors Studio with Lee Strasberg as its teacher. There, he learned with Marlon Brando, Montgomery Clift, Sidney Lumet, and Anne Jackson, who would later become his wife. He was also one of Marilyn Monroe’s first friends when she went to the Actors Studio to learn how to act.
